MANUFACTURING AUTOMATION
Ridge Vent Contouring and Packaging
System
Background
Advent Design’s client developed
a new ridge vent product for venting buildings with contoured
metal roofs. In order to produce the product to specifications
in large quantities the client needed to develop a process to
efficiently cut the vent material off a web to the various metal
panel patterns. Advent Design developed a machining process to
reliably cut the material and developed a set of machines to process
the web material from raw stock (12” x 250’ rolls)
to finished product.

The ridge
vent material is produced from a fiber web. The ridge vent
machine was designed to reliably index the web through the
various manufacturing processes.
In summary the Ridge Vent Contouring system
performs the following operations:
- Unwind raw material
- Calender material
- Contour top surface
- Undercut the material
- Cut material to length. Lengths range
from 25’ to 200’ depending on the final package
configuration.
- Slit 12” web to 4” widths
- Apply adhesive bead to major contours.
The adhesive bead holds to material in place on the roof
during installation prior to nailing.
- Rewind material

Impact
Prior to contacting Advent Design the client
had already developed a marketing program and had actual orders
for product. The system enabled the client to produce his orders
and continue to grow the business. Advent Design has developed
3 generations of equipment for the client. The first generation
of equipment was capable of producing up to 16” repeat patterns.
The current generation of equipment is capable of producing up
to a 48” repeat pattern. The equipment is capable of producing
up to 4 million linear feet of finished product annually.
